Sustainable tourism measures
·        Has developed several useful manuals and guidelines for good practices in environmental management
·        Energy efficiency – recently shifted to 100% energy saving bulbs.
·        Has won various other awards for its sustainable practices, including the Kenya Association of Manufacturers’ Energy Management Awards (Service Sector) twice, in 2005 and 2006.
·        Has a sewage treatment plant for managing its waste water
·        Community support – has supported the education of over 150 children, the establishment of 2 health clinics and two schools, in addition to providing stationery and furniture for many others. Also supports Watamu Turtle Watch, and environmental group that aims to protect turtles and their nesting sites in the area.
·        It has employed 99% locals (about 30; only 2 members of staff are foreigners).
·        Has a member of staff to lead its community and conservation department, and an ‘eco-management’ team that meets once every week.
·        Involved staff in policy formulation and monitoring, including through departmental meetings. For instance, all departments within the facility participate in energy and water monitoring and conservation.
·        Conducts beach clean up exercises jointly with the local community and other stakeholders
·        Local support – offers space for a market of local crafts every Friday. Locals also get income from dancing for visitors. It also offers free meeting facilities for such groups as EAWLS, E.A. Horticultural Society and Watamu Association.
·        There is clear evidence of monitoring of water usage, solid wastes and energy usage.
·        Recycles wastes, including composting organic wastes and papers
·        Reduces cleaning of linen to once every 3 days (unless clients request otherwise)
·        Has been able to effectively take advantage of travelers’ philanthropy to support its various initiatives.
