Does the Mara River have a future?

Article by Ecotourism Kenya

Ecotourism Kenya participated in a wastewater management meeting that was held on June 11, 2009 at Olonana Camp in Masai Mara National Reserve, facilitated by WWF. The meeting heard reports of how the 395 km long Mara River had been degraded over time by farming, pastoralism, mining and tourism-related developments. Strategies that were discussed to improve the situation included effective management of wastewater, sustainable tourism certification and use of a Payment for Ecosystem Services (PES) program that entails downstream users providing incentives for those living upstream to protect the river’s catchment. The meeting’s final report is still being compiled and will be shared with interested EK members once it is received. For further details, contact Doris Ombara of WWF Mara River Basin.
