Reminder: energy & water efficiency training
Dear friend of Ecotourism Kenya
The deadline to register for the Energy and Water Efficiency training has been extended to Tuesday May 8, 2007. This workshop will be held on 10th May 2007 at the AMREF Training Centre, Nairobi from 9:00am to 5:00pm. Members of Ecotourism Kenya are paying Ksh. 1,300 and non-members Ksh 2,000 (inclusive of conference materials and meals). For registration and more information, call Philip on tel. 2724755 or mobile phone 0720 362275. (Kindly note that we have been experiencing intermittent breakdowns with our telephone and internet connection since late last week; we apologize for all who have been unsuccessful at contacting us during that period.)
For this workshop, we have invited Leo Blyth (the founder and managing director of Solapak) to discuss solar power and lighting options and Sarah de Mowbray (a water and sanitation engineer with Greenwater) to discuss the options available for managing water supply, waste water and storm water. Below are brief notes about the training from the two trainers:
Sarah de Mowbray:
Everyone has water issues of some description, be they lack of access to sufficient volumes of clean water, problems disposing of waste water or complications during the rains with flooding. Hazards to human health are rife and the environment usually takes the toll with many unrestricted practices still continuing. Whilst things are slowly changing, it is essential that individuals start taking responsibility for their own problems, particularly those related to waste water.
In this seminar, Sarah will discuss the various options available for managing water supply, waste water and storm water. Particular emphasis will be made on treating water on-site and the great potential this has as a resource. Topics covered will include
- reed beds, design, construction and operation
- package treatment plants
- water budget analysis
- water recycling
- water use minimization
These will be aided with a number of case studies which are applicable for lodges so that managers can leave with clear ideas of areas for improvement at their establishments. There will also be the opportunity to work through a “typical” example to allow an idea of scale of works, investment required and potential savings which can be made.
Lodges may also be looked at on a site by site basis following the end of the seminar if time allows, so it would be helpful if participants can bring all water related information with them. This could include monthly water bills or costs associated with obtaining water (pumping, tanker, electricity costs etc), consumption volumes, visitor numbers, staff numbers, irrigation volumes and roof areas (for rainwater collection calculations).
Ecotourism Kenya considers water management within their award scheme and by improving these three water related factors you could qualify for a higher level of recognition.
Leo J. Blyth:
SolaPak’s founder and Managing Director Leo Blyth draws on his experience designing & installing Solar (electricity) power & lighting systems to give the first in a series of practical ‘how to’ workshops. SolaPak is a Kenyan Solar Power & LED lighting design, manufacture and installation company NOT a consultancy outfit. Participants are advised to bear this in mind and come for a practical ‘hands on’ session that will assist them to get to grips with the essentials of designing and operating solar-electricity power and lighting systems. Solar hot water heating systems will also be touched upon. If you are planning, or already operate, your own solar system then bring all the information that you have with you.
This workshop aims to:
1) Introduce the basic technologies that make up both solar (photovoltaic) electricity generating systems and solar hot water heating systems.
2) Provide participants with an explanation in layman’s terms of the core principles to consider when weighing up whether, and indeed how, to introduce elements or completely switch over to solar powered energy systems.
3) Enable participants to develop a practical energy assessment tool for use to identify their camps energy priorities/objectives, and then clarify how to address their energy needs in a systematic way and measure their camps progress in fulfilling these objectives.
4) Give ample time for participants to ask questions and explore the possibilities of implementing and operating their own solar powered energy systems.
