2009 Ecotourism Conference

MAIN THEMATIC AREAS:

  • CLIMATE CHANGE AND TOURISM MANAGEMENT – climate change has already had a profound impact on tourism in Kenya and the world over, what challenges is this bringing to tourism management and what does it mean for the future of sustainable tourism management? Delegates will benefit from presentations that view climate change from a scientific, business and conservation point of view.

  •  MARKETING BRAND ECO-KENYA- discussions in this theme will include but not be confined to how best to deliver Kenya as a destination for a world class tourism experience, regional branding pro’s and cons, certification and branding: is there a link?

  • COMMUNITY AND CULTURAL TOURISM BUSINESS MANAGEMENT – This theme will explore the practical experiences of developing a community based enterprise, debate will be held on the true identity of what community based enterprises really are and how they tangibly benefit local communities.

  • SUSTAINABLE CONSTRUCTION AND INNOVATIVE DESIGN – delegates will discuss the how-to’s of setting up eco-lodges incorporating green technology for resource conservation, use of local materials, the role of EIA’s in the planning process, legislation around architecture, engineering and planning.

CONFERENCE EVENTS:
In addition to the main conference and presentations, there will be several other related activities running through the program. Proposed activities will include:

Launch: There will be a special presentation and launch of the Tour Operators Certification Scheme”, another first for the region by Ecotourism Kenya. The aim of the voluntary Scheme is to provide a system through which tour operators can demonstrate and keep track of their contributions to sustainable tourism.

Best Practice Workshop (Hosted by Basecamp Foundation www.basecampexplorer.com): This workshop will provide the delegates with first hand information on the practical journey towards sustainable tourism that has been taken by top rated facilities under the voluntary scheme run by Ecotourism Kenya. Delegates will be able to listen to presentations and through a question answer session, have an open discourse with facility representatives on issues surrounding the relevance of certification and the future of certification in promoting sustainable tourism and ecotourism in the region.

Eco-warrior Awards Ceremony: The culmination of the Conference will be a colourful Gala dinner and Eco-warrior Awards Ceremony. This will celebrate the achievements and highlight the journey taken by exceptional organizations and individuals in their quest for sustainable tourism development. Guidelines for nominations.
